The Winterbourne Press

The winterbourne Press is a working printing press based at the historic Winterbourne House & Gardens in Edgbaston, Birmingham. 

It came into existence in 2012, when Winterbourne salvaged some nineteenth century printing presses which were at risk of being scrapped. Rather than see these historic machines broken up and scrapped, Lee Hale, the Director of Winterbourne, salvaged them and restored them with the help of volunteers. Since then Winterbourne has gradually become a renowned hub for letterpress printing and salvaged many more presses which would have otherwise been lost. It is now home to several 19th century presses, these are used for workshops, demonstrations and for making cards and bags sold in Winterbourne’s gift shop.

Winterbourne House & Gardens is a rare surviving example of an early 20th century suburban villa and garden, its open most days of the year and is a great day out for all the family. On most Wednesdays and Fridays volunteers demonstrate the presses and are happy to chat to visitors about their use.

The acquisition in 2019 of a 1968 Heidelberg press and a 1960s Intertype hot-metal typesetting machine necessitated the widening of a doorway to enable these massive objects to be accommodated. Thankfully the pre-owned EBA 480 EP guillotine they purchased from us fitted through the doorway into its new spot with no problems!

A guillotine was needed but something a little more modern so they decided on a pre-owned EBA 480 EP guillotine. Able to cut a full ream of 500 sheets of paper with very high level of accuracy with safety guards fitted to front and rear and complies with new European standards.

Supplied fully serviced with a sharp blade fitted, blade change tool, new cutting stick, operation manual, log book and HSE certificate. Our expert engineers deliver, install and can also provide any training on the delivery day.
